Hello everyone! I’m Teacher Kavitha from Lil’ but Mighty. As the September holidays approach, I’m excited to share some fun activities you can enjoy with your child while sneakily boosting their English skills 😊 . These activities offer a perfect blend of relaxation and learning, allowing you to create valuable English learning moments without the academic pressure. Let’s make this break both fun and productive! Here are some ideas to get you started.

1. “The Tiger Who Came to Tea” Stage Show

Watching a well-loved story come alive on stage is a wonderful way to spark a child’s love for reading and language. The Tiger Who Came to Tea introduces children to expressive storytelling, rich vocabulary, and playful dialogue. By experiencing the story in a theatrical setting, students can strengthen listening comprehension, pick up new words in context, and gain confidence in retelling the tale themselves. All of which are skills that build a strong foundation in English.

English Learning Moments

Writing: Imagine and write an alternate ending to the story.

Speaking: Retell the story in their own words as if explaining to a friend.

Vocabulary: Collect descriptive words for the tiger (e.g., “polite,” “hungry,” “mysterious”).

Reading: Read the original picture book before or after the show to connect stage and text.

2. KidsSTOP Science Holiday Workshops (Science Centre Singapore)

Science meets language learning at KidsSTOP! These workshops encourage children to ask questions, discuss ideas, and explain discoveries in their own words. All of which sharpen communication skills. With engaging themes and hands-on experiments, kids are exposed to subject-specific vocabulary and opportunities to practise describing what they observe. Parents can look forward to their children not only developing a curiosity for science, but also expanding the way they use English to express their thoughts clearly.

Watt’s Up, Witch! (ages 5 to 6: 9 Sept, Ages 7 to 8: 10 Sept), 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM

English Learning Moments

Writing: Record experiment steps in a mini “science journal.” Speaking: Present findings to parents in a simple show-and-tell format.

Vocabulary: Introduce STEM words like “circuit,” “battery,” “energy,” and “magnet.”

Reading: Read simple science facts or labels on experiment materials.

3. National Museum of Singapore – The River Hunt: A Mission-Based Artefact Hunt Activity

The National Museum’s family programmes combine creativity with storytelling, giving students the chance to listen, imagine, and share. Activities such as guided tours, interactive stories, and craft-based tasks encourage children to practise describing what they see and hear, while also engaging with heritage-related vocabulary.

An event to highlight this September holidays will be The River Hunt, an exciting adventure through the National Museum’s special SG60 exhibition, Once Upon a Tide! With no registration required and being free of charge, participants aged 5 to 12 will follow clues and answer questions to find the ultimate treasure.

Exploring history in this way helps students to deepen their language use, connect words to real-life contexts, and gain confidence in speaking and writing about their experiences.

Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM (last admission 6:30 PM).
The River Hunt Hours: 10am – 12.30pm & 1.30pm – 6pm (last Hunt sheet given out at 5.30pm)

English Learning Moments

Writing: Create captions for exhibits like a mini tour guide.

Speaking: Pretend to be a museum guide and explain one exhibit in English.

4. Air Force Day at the Singapore Air Force Museum

Step into the world of aviation at the Singapore Air Force Museum this September! Families can explore real aircraft, try out flight simulators, and role-play as pilots or engineers. The event makes history and technology come alive, while also giving children a chance to listen, describe, and share their experiences—skills that sharpen both imagination and English communication.

5. Manta Rays Programme at the Singapore Oceanarium

Event description:

A limited-time programme held in celebration of World Manta Day, children and parents can dive deep into the underwater world at the Singapore Oceanarium’s special Manta Rays Programme this September holidays! Children will discover fascinating facts about manta rays, their habitats, and the importance of marine conservation. With interactive exhibits and guided talks, the programme blends science with storytelling, giving kids a chance to expand their vocabulary and practise expressing what they learn in English.

Dates: 6 – 20 September 2025

Opening Hours: 10 am – 6 pm (check official schedule for programme times)

Venue: Singapore Oceanarium, Resorts World Sentosa

Tickets: General admission charges apply (special programmes may require add-ons)

English Learning Moments

Writing: Kids can create a mini fact sheet or poster about manta rays using information they gather, practising note-taking and summary skills.
