Earth Hour – Oral Topic

One popular topic that appears during the stimulus-based conversation component of the oral examination is that of recycling and conservation. Knowing relevant general knowledge and having personal experience that pertains to the topic will help a pupil elaborate on his/her answer and bring it to the next level! Today, we are going to share about an important annual event that relates to the topic of recycling and conservation – The Earth Hour – Oral Topic!

Did you know that The Earth Hour is celebrated on the last Saturday of March each year? This event is held every year to encourage individuals, communities, and businesses to turn of non-essential electric lights for one hour, usually from 8.30pm – 9.30pm.

Earth is precious to us as we only have one of it. In fact, scientists have calculated the Earth to be around 4.5 billion years old! Earth is the only planet in our solar system that can support life. This is because it has two very important things – oxygen and water! Not only do we love oxygen and water, but we need it to survive. This is why we must do our part to protect our beautiful and life-sustaining planet.

Even though The Earth Hour is over for this year, we can still do our part for our planet! Here are some lil’ but impactful ways in which we can help our planet:

1. Swap plastic water bottles for aluminium bottles.
In order to keep our environment clean, let’s use reusable bottles instead of disposable bottles for a start. Did you know that single-use plastics pollute our oceans, and cause devastation to wildlife and the environment as a whole?

2. Turn off the water when you brush your teeth.
Guilty as charged. A lot of us have this habit and now’s the time to break it! By turning of the tap when we are brushing our teeth, we will be able to save gallons of water a year with this one tiny change.

3. Make art from your trash.
Items like bottle caps, ice-cream sticks, old CDs and even plastic spoons may look deceiving. However, these very items can be transformed into art projects for you to create something out of it. Anything you like. Cool, right?
