Johor Bahru Corporate Retreat

How to Organise a Johor Bahru Corporate Retreat

Introduction: Why JB for a Corporate Retreat?

Hello! I’m Su Xin, a teacher at Lil’ but Mighty. Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to join the committee planning our Johor Bahru corporate retreat—held in celebration of the company’s tenth birthday. My role was to communicate retreat details to colleagues, plan the company dinner, and even host the event on the actual night!

The Johor Bahru corporate retreat took almost a year to plan. Each committee member was in charge of sourcing vendors, making bookings, and curating meaningful activities. While a year sounds long, the steady pace allowed us to think through our decisions carefully and create an experience that felt intentional, enjoyable, and memorable.

My amazing Johor Bahru corporate retreat committee members. There were such great teamwork and support from every single of them!

Choosing JB as our destination was an easy decision. It offered the perfect balance—far enough from home for a refreshing getaway, yet close enough to keep logistics simple and stress-free. With its wide variety of activity options and convenient travel time, JB was a great fit for our celebration.

And yes—I absolutely had a blast, even with the “work” involved! Seeing my colleagues enjoy themselves made every bit of planning worthwhile. Here are some of the lessons and tips we picked up along the way:

Tip #1: Define the Purpose of the Retreat

A retreat is so much more than just a holiday. It is a chance for staff to step away from the daily grind, bond with colleagues, reflect on the year, and recharge mentally and emotionally. For us, hitting the tenth-year milestone was a deeply meaningful moment. We wanted the retreat to give everyone time to reflect on our growth and, most importantly, to show appreciation to the people who built Lil’ but Mighty—past, present, and future.

The committee also wanted to balance structured bonding activities with free- and-easy pockets of time. A 3D2N trip offered enough time to do both comfortably, without feeling rushed.

Tip #2: Choose the Right Venue

When in doubt, ask your colleagues who frequent JB—they always have good recommendations! The most common request we heard was: “Please pick a hotel with a nice breakfast.” And we delivered.

Capri by Fraser turned out to be an excellent choice.

Great international breakfast buffet
Convenient location close to the checkpoint
Easy access to nearby malls (10–15 minutes away)

Another major plus: they offered a private lounge/meeting room we could use for our company dinner. While we considered booking a restaurant, we realised it would limit our ability to hold games, a lucky draw, and other interactive segments. Capri’s lounge/meeting room gave us space, privacy, audio equipment, and the flexibility to run the night exactly as we envisioned. The buffet dinner—complete with appetisers, mains, desserts, and even barbecue items— was a hit!

Tip #3: Curate Activities That Bring Out Team Spirit

For our main bonding activity, we organised a Mall Scavenger Hunt. Colleagues were divided into teams and raced around the mall solving riddles based on shop names. It was chaotic, hilarious, and unexpectedly fun—definitely something none of us had tried before.

If you’re planning your own retreat, consider engaging JB-based vendors who specialise in team-building experiences. A quick Google search will reveal plenty of options.

New experiences tend to break down walls quickly. Throw in a little competitiveness, and you’ll see teamwork, camaraderie, and lots of laughter emerge naturally.

Tip #4: Don’t Forget the Heart — Celebrate Milestones Meaningfully

Our company dinner was the highlight of the retreat. We went with a Video Game theme, playing on the idea of “levelling up” to celebrate how far Lil’ but Mighty has come.

The speeches by our founders, Lily and Lenard, were short yet powerful. Their words of appreciation reminded us that every single staff member contributes to the heartbeat of the company. One key message stood out: “It takes a village.”

In education, every role—big or small—shapes the experiences of our students. Honouring that shared mission made the night especially meaningful.

We also screened video montages showcasing fond memories from over the years. It was a beautiful way to reflect on our journey and acknowledge the collective effort behind Lil’ but Mighty’s growth.

Conclusion: Why Corporate Retreats Matter

By the end of the retreat, I felt rejuvenated and incredibly grateful. Stepping away from work helped me connect with colleagues in a relaxed setting, deepen friendships, and learn more about people I see weekly but rarely get to interact with outside the classroom.

And the best part? Almost everyone echoed the same sentiment—that the retreat was refreshing, meaningful, and worth every minute.

So if you’re wondering whether to organise a corporate retreat… do it.
It may only be three days, but the impact—stronger connections, renewed motivation, and a shared sense of purpose—will stay with your team for a long time to come.

Ms Su Xin’s love for the language began from weekly visits to the library as a child, where she picked up books and disappeared into the literary worlds created by authors.  Through reading and writing, she realised she got to expand her knowledge about the world and express herself in the best possible way. Literature and English became subjects she enjoyed in school and her appreciation and love for the English language grew from there.  This has helped fuel her motivation to create lessons to help students experience language in the same way she did. She hopes to teach students to use the English language effectively, efficiently and creatively too!
