Lil’ but Mighty Founder Featured in 8World Coverage on PSLE English Oral Exam Changes Singapore

Our Founder, Mrs. Lily Chew, was recently featured in prominent 8World news coverage regarding the increased weightage of the PSLE English Oral exam and its impact on students’ preparation. As the weightage of the oral exam rises from 15% to 20%, many students are now facing more challenging content, and Lil’ but Mighty has seen a significant uptick in enrolment for oral exam preparation courses.

According to multiple tuition centres, including Lil’ but Mighty, student enrolment in oral preparation classes has doubled as a result of these changes. Educational experts believe this reform provides an opportunity for students who may have struggled with writing but excel in oral communication, allowing them to shine and showcase their strengths.

Speaking on the adjustments, Mrs. Chew shared, “We’ve observed that students are now required to demonstrate stronger logical thinking, emotional connection, and reasoning skills, especially during the situational-based conversation segment. At Lil’ but Mighty, we have integrated these new requirements into our teaching strategies, helping students adapt and excel in the revised format.”

She continued, “While this change has made the exam more demanding, we believe it offers a chance for students to develop better communication skills, something we’ve always emphasised at Lil’ but Mighty.”

Tuition centres across the island, including Lil’ but Mighty, have reported a rise in enrolment for short oral exam courses, with some centres seeing student numbers increase by two to three times this holiday season. Mrs. Chew attributes this surge to the increased focus on developing oral communication skills in the updated exam format.

“At Lil’ but Mighty, we’ve been preparing our students for the evolving PSLE oral format for a while now. We’ve adjusted our curriculum to align with the new expectations, ensuring our students are confident and well-prepared,” said Mrs. Chew.

Dr. Fang Liyun, Senior Lecturer at the National Institute of Education, praised the changes, stating that while school teachers have already been preparing students for these new challenges, parents can play a key role in fostering their children’s expression skills by engaging in more conversations about everyday life.

Dr. Kao, another senior lecturer, supported the reform, noting that it is a thoughtful step towards honing students’ real-world communication abilities.

At Lil’ but Mighty, we are excited to continue supporting our students in mastering the skills necessary for success in the revised PSLE oral exam. Through our tailored approach and dedication to nurturing both academic and practical communication skills, we are committed to empowering our students to perform at their best.
