Master the 2025 PSLE Oral SBC Response: Key Strategies and Sample Answers to Boost Your Score

PSLE ORAL SBC Response

Welcome back, lil’ ones! My name is Mr Joel Lim and I am a Specialist English Teacher at Lil’ but Mighty. We will be building on what was covered in the previous post and going through how we can ace the Stimulus-based Conversation (SBC) response!

Recap: Do you remember how to come up with good content points in the SBC?
(a) Look at the actions and facial expressions of the characters in the stimulus (and any other interesting elements in the stimulus)
(b) Put yourself in the shoes of the characters in the stimulus and think about: what they are experiencing and how they are feeling

Example Time!

Let’s have a look at the stimulus from the previous post! Based on the strategies we had covered, were you able to come up with any good points?

Stimulus-Based Conversation Picture

  1. Look at the photograph. What do you think the people in the photograph are doing?

Based on what we had covered in the previous post, let’s break down the stimulus and come up with potential ideas and responses!

Analysis

1. Let’s pay close attention to the question requirements! Since the question is about what the characters are doing, we should: pay close attention to the actions and the facial expressions of the people in the photograph!

2. Instead of just casually describing their actions and/or facial expressions, we should: analyse them carefully and choose vivid descriptive words!

3. Finally, we should: put ourselves in their shoes — what do you think you would be doing if you were in their position! Draw on your own experiences to be able to elaborate on theirs effectively!

To start off, let’s see whether you were able to pick out your 3 content points!

PSLE ORAL SBC Response

Did you manage to pick out all of them correctly?

Now that we have our content points, let’s start brainstorming for our response!

To start off, ask yourself:

• What do you think these characters are doing?
• Why do you think so? Is there any evidence to support your ideas?
• What descriptive words can you use?
• What would you do if you were in their position?

Try to answer these questions before checking the sample response!

Sample Responses

Let’s have a look at some sample responses we have come up with!

Were the responses that you have thought of similar to the ones we have shared? Even if they are not, fret not! As long as your responses are logical and reasonable, they would be accepted!

Putting Everything Together!

Now that we have our content points, the next step is to think about how we can put everything together. If you’re stuck thinking about how you should begin your response, a good way to do so would be to describe the situation in the stimulus.

We can do this by thinking about the 5W1H questions! They are:

Who are the characters in the stimulus?
Where is this taking place?
When is this taking place?
What are the characters in the stimulus doing?
How are the characters in the stimulus feeling?
Why are the characters in the stimulus feeling that way?

Here is an example of how developing the situation using 5W1H would look like:

Once done, go ahead to share the three points you have prepared!

Describing the situation ensures that we have taken the time to consider all the details inside the stimulus. Sharing them would also allow us to demonstrate to our listeners that we understand what is happening in the stimulus.

Wrap up!

In order to ace the SBC, it is important to be detail-oriented! Pick out as many details from the stimulus and elaborate on your ideas so that you can have a response that is well-developed and interesting!

Take some time to practise these strategies. With enough practice, you’ll be able to execute these techniques effectively! Be sure to use this the next time you prepare for an oral practice!

If you had any other points about what the characters were doing in the stimulus or would like to share any other strategies with us, please leave a comment! We’d be happy to hear what you have come up with! Till next time!
