Educational experts have identified three main learning styles, namely visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic learning. Today, I’m excited for you to find out which style is the most predominant for yourself, and how understanding your type of learner can transform the way you study.
Watch the video below!
I’m going to share with you how you can identify what type of learner you are, so that you can tailor your study approach to maximise your learning potential and achieve academic success.
Identifying Your Learning Style
In order to find out which of these three types of learners you are, you should consider how you prefer to study and learn new information.
Pay attention to which methods of learning feel most natural and effective for you. Experiment with different study techniques and assess which ones help you retain information and understand concepts more easily. Your unique learning style holds the key to unlocking your academic potential.
Let’s Take a Closer Look at the Three Learning Styles
1. Visual
If you are a visual learner, you find that you learn best through charts, graphs, diagrams, maps, or videos.
You also realise that you have an ability to remember such visual information compared to listening to explanations.
When studying, you prefer making annotations such as underlining, highlighting, or writing notes in different colours.
If this sounds like you, tailor your study techniques to incorporate more visual aids and strategies that match your learning style. For instance, draw pictures or diagrams when learning new vocabulary. When you hear your teacher explain a concept, try to visualise it in your mind.
Understanding that you are this type of learner can help you structure your study approach to play to your strengths.
2. Auditory
If you are an auditory learner, you learn by hearing and listening. You understand and remember things you have heard. You store information by how it sounds and have an easier time understanding spoken instructions than written ones.
You often learn by reading out loud because you must hear or speak it to know it. If you found yourself nodding your head and agreeing with what I have just mentioned, you are an auditory learner!
To harness your learning style, verbalise concepts out loud when trying to remember techniques. You can even try creating your own songs or rhymes to help you study. When learning how to spell words, consider recording yourself spelling out the words and then listening to the recording. Being aware that this is your type of learner can make studying more productive and enjoyable.
3. Kinaesthetic
If neither of the earlier learning styles resonates with you, chances are, you could be a kinaesthetic learner!
Do you find yourself moving around a lot while studying? Or perhaps, when explaining something to your friend, you often use hand gestures to emphasise your points?
Kinaesthetic learners are students who enjoy hands-on activities and get excited by classroom activities that require movement, creating something, or using tactile methods.
If you identify with this type of learner, fret not. When doing your revision at home, use your finger to “draw” out concepts. You can try explaining new ideas to a sibling, a soft toy, or even the wall. Flashcards and mini whiteboards can become your best friends when studying.
What If You’re a Blend of Learning Styles?
Some of you may even resonate with more than one type of learner, or all three! If more than one type describes you, you probably have a blend of learning styles, and that’s completely okay. You can still incorporate the techniques from different types of learners to suit your needs.
Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all method! The most important thing is to utilise study methods that align closely with your learning style(s). Doing so will help you retain information effectively and enhance your overall academic performance.
