Ms Cynthia is an English Teacher at Lil’ but Mighty. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from National University of Singapore as a Linguistics Major in 2013, she went on to receive a Postgraduate Diploma in Education in National Institute of Education before starting her teaching career.
In Ms Cynthia’s 5 years of English Language teaching experience, she has enjoyed guiding her students to explore the literary world and provide them with the tools to unpack and decipher texts. She believes in the use of rich texts to make learning of the content or linguistic object meaningful and engaging. She will also contextualise learning in the real-world context so that fruitful discussions can take place.
Furthermore, she believes in the importance of building rapport with her students so as to better understand their needs and how she can help them to improve in their areas of weakness.
As a teacher who is passionate about the language, she hopes to inspire the children to become creative and critical thinkers who will be ready to face the challenges of the world.
Ms Cynthia has undergone our in-house Movers and Shakers Teacher Training Programme.
What is it like working at LBM?
At LBM, I am fortunate to be able to work with like-minded individuals who have the same passion in wanting to help our students unlock and achieve their potential. There is a very supportive system at LBM where teachers are themselves given the opportunity to explore, research and share methodologies with the common aim of helping our students to be ready for their assessments in school, as well as to become purposeful speakers and writers of the language.
What inspires you to teach?
I find joy in being able to help my students and that makes teaching very rewarding. Knowing that I am able to make a positive change, no matter how small, makes teaching worthwhile. Furthermore, this profession also allows me to learn as I teach. I am never at a standstill as I continue to develop my professional and personal self. I personally also enjoy the interactions with my students and they make me feel young(er)!
Why do you love teaching English?
I love teaching English because it is a vibrant and creative language. We can express ourselves in many different ways and see things from different perspectives. I am also able to teach my students how powerful words can be and to use the language to voice their opinions.
What do you do in your free time?
During my free time, I love spending time with my family. Nothing beats being able to watch my son explore the world around him! Also, I love practising yoga. This “me” time is necessary as it allows me to take a step away from work or the responsibilities of a mother/wife.
