Reviews for Teacher Elaine
In Ms Elaine’s 24 years in the profession, she has had the opportunity to work with children of various backgrounds, cultures, strengths and abilities. Her teaching career began in 1997 as a teacher at Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School. After 8 years at the school, she moved on to teach in the private education industry.
Ms Elaine is a passionate individual who loves working with children and nurturing the love for the English Language in them. She believes that language learning is not just about getting a good grade in school, it is empowering every child with the ability to express himself creatively and confidently. To her, the ability to use language to do just that is what makes us human. As a teacher, she always encourage every child she teaches, to get out of his comfort zone in order to experiment with new writing techniques and to never be afraid of making mistakes because making mistakes often shows us how to do things even better!
Every child is unique and acquires language differently. Her goal as a teacher is to explore and find out what works for each child so that every child can maximise his potential and be the best that he can possibly be.
Ms Elaine has undergone our in-house Movers and Shakers Teacher Training Programme.
What is it like working at LBM?
I like working at LBM because the company is made up of like-minded people like myself who enjoy teaching English. I enjoy bouncing off ideas with my younger colleagues at work because no matter how long I have taught, there is always something I can learn and something I can contribute in return.
Why do you love teaching English?
I enjoy teaching English because I have always been a language person. I loved language the moment I learnt to decode words when I was only three and discovered the joys of reading. In the then non-internet era, books really took me places I would never have imagined on my own. As an English teacher, I try my best to help children see the beauty in language because it is such an important skill in communication. I often tell my students that language is the foundation stone upon which all knowledge is built upon. We can imagine and help others imagine a lot in words the way we do with colours.
What do you do in your free time?
I ice skate a lot in my free time. I enjoy the sense of freedom that comes from being on ice and the satisfaction of working with the blades beneath my feet to express myself. If I’m not chilling (literally sometimes!) out at the rink, I’m usually holed up at some coffee place with an e-book for company!
