Ms Chua's Profile
While in NUS, she was one of the organisers and facilitators of a Children’s English Literacy programme held in collaboration with a non-profit community service agency. Through writing engaging lesson material and facilitating classes with other volunteers, Ms Geraldine helped low-income primary school students grow their reading and writing abilities while inspiring a love for English and learning. To gain experience handling students of varying abilities and backgrounds, Ms Geraldine facilitated enrichment programmes and hands-on workshops at various international schools and non-profit groups across Singapore during her time in NUS.
Following her graduation from NUS, Ms Geraldine decided to marry her passions for student mentorship and the English language by embarking on her professional teaching career at an enrichment company specialising in English. After teaching a wide variety of levels (P1 – P6, S1 – S4) at the organisation, she began to specialise in teaching O Level English and also reworked its O Level curriculum by ensuring effective scaffolding of skills, enhanced student engagement, and coherent lesson themes. Eager to expose herself to other teaching pedagogies and further develop her skills in curriculum planning, she joined Lil’ But Mighty to continue growing as an educator and curriculum writer.
As a teacher, Ms Geraldine believes in making authentic connections with her students, and prioritises fostering student-teacher rapport as it is one of the key building blocks of a nurturing mentorship. She acknowledges that being a student in the Singaporean education system is not an easy journey and aims to approach each child and their experiences with empathy and affirmation. By helping each student to grow comfortable with openly discussing their interests, strengths, and weaknesses, she hopes that this will push them to become introspective, self- aware individuals who are driven by self-improvement and self-discovery.
In her free time, Ms Geraldine enjoys writing her own prose and poetry, online gaming with friends, as well as critically analysing movies by penning down reviews. A die-hard fan of Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as an avid consumer of Netflix shows, she draws on such material in her process of lesson planning and curriculum design, with the goal of boosting student engagement and interest.
Ms Chua has undergone our in-house Movers and Shakers Teacher Training Programme.
