For the third instalment on phrasal verbs, let’s look at these two verbs: give and take. As a quick recap, remember that to form a phrasal verb, you would need to combine a preposition or an adverb with each of these verbs. Take a look at the diagrams below:
Now let’s see if you are able to remember the phrasal verbs I have shared for today’s post. For each question, there are four options given but there is only one correct answer. Remember to use the clues within each sentence to help you pick the answer accurately!
Question 1

The correct answer is option (2) because she would have to abandon her dream of becoming a professional athlete as she had a knee injury.
Question 2

The new manager will assume control over the team from next week, hence, the correct answer is option (3).
Question 3
3.She regretted ______________ her grandmother’s antique vase to a thrift store.
- giving up

A thrift store is a shop that sells used things such as clothes, books and furniture, and it is common for people to donate their used items to such a store. In this sentence, the correct answer is option (3) because she wished she had not given her grandmother’s vase away for free to the shop.
Question 4
4.The school is encouraging students to ______________ volunteering as a way to gain experience.
- take on
- take over
- take up
- take off
Answer for Question 4
The correct answer is option (3). The school wants its pupils to start a new activity; in this case, volunteering. Take note that ‘take on’ is usually used for responsibilities or jobs, and not activities.
